Whether you’re trying to keep the kids entertained during the summer holidays, planning a weekend adventure or simply looking for somewhere new to explore, Warwickshire is packed with fantastic outdoor play spaces. From nature reserves and country parks to huge adventure playgrounds and splash parks, there’s no shortage of places where children can run, climb, splash and discover.
As a Warwickshire family ourselves, we’re always on the lookout for places that get everyone outdoors. Some are perfect for a full day out, while others are ideal for an hour or two after school. These are the places we keep coming back to, and hopefully they’ll become favourites for your family too.
1. Ryton Pools Country Park
If we had to choose one family day out in Warwickshire, Ryton Pools would probably take the top spot. It’s one of those places we return to time and time again because there’s always something different to enjoy.
The adventure playground is one of the best in the county, with climbing frames, swings and plenty of space for children to let off steam. Beyond the play area, you’ll find peaceful lakes, woodland trails and wide paths that are perfect for scooters, balance bikes or a gentle family walk. If you’re lucky enough to visit when the miniature railway is running, it’s well worth a ride.
Whether you’re stopping for an hour or packing a picnic for the whole day, Ryton Pools always delivers.

2. Brandon Marsh Nature Reserve
Brandon Marsh is somewhere that encourages children to slow down, get curious and really connect with nature. It’s a wonderful alternative to a traditional playground and one of our favourite places for getting outdoors.
The walking trails wind through wetlands, woodland and meadows, with plenty of opportunities to spot birds, butterflies, dragonflies and other wildlife along the way. Children can build dens, enjoy nature play areas and get involved with seasonal activities that make every visit feel a little different.
If your little ones love exploring rather than rushing from one climbing frame to the next, they’ll absolutely love Brandon Marsh.
Facilities: Café, toilets, visitor centre, pushchair-friendly routes and family events.
Summer highlights: Pond dipping, den building, Bugs & Butterflies workshops, Wild Dyeing sessions and family nature clubs.
3. St Nicholas’ Park, Warwick
Just a short walk from Warwick Castle, St Nicholas’ Park is the perfect place to combine history with play.
The large playground keeps children entertained for ages, while the surrounding park offers riverside walks, crazy golf, pedal boats during the warmer months and lots of space for a picnic or a kickabout.
It’s also a lovely place to stop if you’re already visiting Warwick for the day.

4. Coombe Abbey Park
Coombe Abbey is one of those places where you can arrive without much of a plan and still end up spending the whole day there.
The adventure playground is fantastic, but what really makes Coombe Abbey special is the amount of space. Woodland trails, lakeside walks, open grassland and plenty of picnic spots mean children have the freedom to explore and play however they like.
If you’re looking for a free family day out that offers something for everyone, Coombe Abbey is hard to beat.

5. Abbey Fields, Kenilworth
Abbey Fields is one of those parks that’s ideal for a relaxed family morning or afternoon.
The playground is modern and spacious, while the splash play area becomes a huge hit whenever the weather warms up. Add in the duck pond, the historic abbey ruins and nearby cafés, and it’s easy to see why so many local families love spending time here.
Pack a change of clothes if your children enjoy water play—you’ll probably need them!

6. Hatton Adventure World
If you’re looking to fill an entire day, Hatton Adventure World is always a great choice.
Alongside outdoor adventure play, children can meet farm animals, enjoy tractor rides, explore giant sand pits and watch seasonal shows during the school holidays. There’s enough to keep everyone busy, whatever the weather.
While it’s one of the few paid attractions on this list, it’s easy to spend a full day here, making it excellent value for many families.

7. Hartshill Hayes Country Park
Hartshill Hayes feels like a proper adventure.
Instead of brightly coloured climbing frames, you’ll find woodland trails, hidden paths, incredible viewpoints and endless opportunities for children to create their own fun. It’s the sort of place where sticks become swords, fallen trees become obstacle courses and every walk feels like an expedition.
If your family enjoys exploring the outdoors, this hidden gem deserves a place on your list.
8. Kingsbury Water Park
With over 600 acres of lakes, woodland and open countryside, Kingsbury Water Park offers plenty of room for family adventures.
There are several play areas scattered throughout the park, alongside cycling routes, lakeside walks and endless opportunities to spot wildlife. Even during the school holidays it rarely feels overcrowded, making it a great choice if you prefer quieter outdoor spaces.
Don’t forget your bikes if you’ve got them.
9. Newbold Comyn
Sometimes children don’t need lots of equipment—they simply need space.
Newbold Comyn offers exactly that, with huge open fields, woodland paths and a lovely playground. It’s perfect for flying a kite, kicking a football, walking the dog or simply enjoying a picnic while the children burn off some energy.
Simple days out are often the best ones.
10. Ryton Wood
Often overshadowed by neighbouring Ryton Pools, Ryton Wood is a beautiful ancient woodland that’s well worth exploring in its own right.
The peaceful woodland trails feel wonderfully wild, especially during spring when bluebells carpet the forest floor or autumn when the leaves begin to change colour. It’s a lovely place to introduce children to nature without travelling far from home.
If you’re already visiting Ryton Pools, it’s well worth extending your walk into the woods.
Summer Holiday Nature Events
If you’re visiting during the school holidays, it’s worth checking what’s on before you head out. Many of Warwickshire’s parks and nature reserves run fantastic family events that give children the chance to get hands-on with nature.
Keep an eye out for:
- Bug hunting and ranger-led adventures at Ryton Pools.
- Pond dipping sessions at Brandon Marsh.
- Den building workshops.
- Wildlife discovery walks.
- Nature crafts using leaves, flowers and natural materials.
- Family wildlife clubs and mini ranger sessions.
Many of these activities book up quickly, so it’s worth planning ahead if there’s something your little explorers would love.
